Torque bind on tight turns
Hopping, shuddering or binding in tight, slow turns means the front and rear axles are being forced to turn at different speeds. On the manual car the viscous coupling in the center differential locks when tyres are mismatched or when the coupling itself has worn, and a rear limited-slip differential full of black fluid can add to it.
Frequency basis: Most BP torque-bind threads are automatics, where the transfer clutch is the usual culprit. On the 5MT the viscous center coupling fails less often, and the reports that exist usually trace to mismatched tyres or a worn rear differential. Rated occasional for this car.
Symptoms
- Jerking, hopping or a scraping feel in tight parking-lot turns, worse when the driveline is hot
- Clunks that sound like a bearing but change with steering angle
- On automatics: car creeps and jerks with the wheel at full lock (transfer clutch)
Causes found
- Tyres of different circumference (more than about 1/4 in), one new tyre, or uneven pressures shearing the viscous coupling until it degrades
- Worn viscous center coupling in the 5MT
- Rear differential with burnt fluid or a worn viscous limited-slip unit
- CV joints or wheel bearings misdiagnosed as bind
Check in this order
- Measure all four tyre circumferences and set pressures (32 psi front / 30 psi rear on the 2005 placard) before anything else
- Rule out CV joints and wheel bearings
- Drain the rear differential and look at the fluid: black with metal points at the rear unit
- If bind remains with matched tyres and healthy axles, the center differential assembly is the repair
What fixed it
- Matching tyres fixed many reports outright
- A front and rear differential fluid change cured grab in tight turns on one 2007 at 138k
- Center differential assembly replacement on the 5MT (remanufactured units are sold by Subaru specialists); on automatics a transfer clutch job did not fully cure one 2005
- Dealer repairs that did not address tyres or the rear unit left the symptom in place
