Engine Details

The EJ255 is Subaru's 2.5-liter horizontally opposed (“flat-four”) engine with dual overhead camshafts, a single turbocharger, and a top-mounted intercooler. In the 2005 Outback XT it was rated at 250 hp and 250 lb-ft, the same tune as the 2005 Legacy GT, and it runs on premium fuel.

The factory service manual files this engine under the chapter code H4DOTC (horizontal 4, DOHC, turbocharged). The 2.5i uses H4SO and the 3.0R uses H6DO; those chapters are kept on the manuals page for cross-reference but do not describe this car.

Factory service figures from the H4DOTC chapters: engine oil capacity 4.0 L to the upper mark at replacement, iridium spark plugs gapped to 0.7–0.8 mm and torqued to 21 N·m, total coolant capacity about 7.3 L on the manual-transmission car, and GL-5 gear oil in the 5MT (3.5 L) and rear differential (0.8 L).

The BP Outback XT

2005 was the first model year of the BP-chassis Outback and the first time a turbocharged Outback was sold in the United States. The 2.5XT arrived alongside the 2.5i and the six-cylinder 3.0R, and it shared its turbo drivetrain with the Legacy 2.5GT.

The XT came with either a five-speed automatic or a five-speed manual. This car is one of the manual-transmission wagons, which makes it the rarer of the two configurations. It was built by Subaru of Indiana Automotive in Lafayette, Indiana, rather than in Gunma, Japan.

The parts catalog on this site was pulled for this exact VIN, so the option splits (wagon body, EJ255, 5MT, 25GT class, 4WD) already match the car. Production-date ranges on individual rows still matter: the catalog covers 2003–2007 builds and some parts changed mid-run.

Important Notes

  • The 2005 FSM covers Legacy and Outback together. For engine work use the H4DOTC chapters, not H4SO (2.5i) or H6DO (3.0R).
  • The turbo oil supply line on the EJ255 has a small screen inside a banjo bolt. A clogged screen starves the turbocharger of oil; this is a widely reported XT/GT issue rather than a factory service item, so check it whenever the oil feed line is off.
  • The EJ255 wants premium fuel and clean, full oil. Low oil level on a turbo boxer is a fast way to damage the turbo and the engine.
  • Parts rows list production-date ranges from the catalog. Match the range to this car's build date when a part number changed mid-run.
