Piston ringland failure
Detonation cracks the thin land between the piston rings, usually on cylinder 4, which runs leanest and hottest. Power loss, oil consumption and a misfire follow, and the fix is a new short block.
Frequency basis: The signature EJ255/EJ257 failure in Subaru turbo forums, but on stock Outback XTs it is reported far less often than turbo failures. One 2005 XT thread (26 replies) had a shop diagnosis that other members doubted; the confirmed cases in the sources are tuned Legacy GTs and a 2009 XT at 58k miles making 357 whp.
Symptoms
- Misfire at idle or light load after a hard pull, often cylinder 4
- Rising oil consumption and blue smoke
- Knocking or ticking, loss of compression on one cylinder
- A cold compression test can pass while a hot leak-down test shows more than 30% on the bad cylinder
Causes found
- Detonation from regular fuel, a bad tune, boost leaks causing lean mixtures, or ignoring knock-related codes
- Heat: the factory ring gap is tight, and Subaru opened it up on later EJ257 engines
- Low oil level or oil starvation adds heat and wear
Check in this order
- Do not accept a ringland diagnosis without a hot leak-down test; one shop quoted $4,000 for a built motor without testing
- Rule out the PCV valve, turbo seals and valve cover leaks as the oil-use cause first
- Pull the plugs and compare their colour; look for knock counts in logged data
What fixed it
- Prevention: premium fuel only, keep the oil full, fix boost leaks and lean codes promptly, do not run a canned aggressive tune on a stock up-pipe
- Repair is a short block or a complete engine: quotes ran $3,500–8,000 for a rebuild, or a used/JDM engine swap for less
- Some owners chose to sell the car rather than repair at this point
