Open recalls to verify by VIN (airbag inflators, brake lines)

A 20-year-old car has usually had some recalls done and not others. The passenger airbag inflator and brake line campaigns are the ones that matter on this car; the ignition-switch recall applies to automatics, not the 5MT.

Very commonSeverity: CriticalApplicability: Direct

Frequency basis: NHTSA lists nine recall campaigns for the 2005 Outback: four Takata passenger airbag inflator recalls (15V-323, 20V-001/002/003), two brake-line recalls (13V-110, 14V-311), a side-curtain airbag recall from 2004 (04V-274), a 2003–2005 airbag recall for high-humidity areas (14V-763), and the 2019 ignition-switch recall (19V-297, automatics only). Airbags account for 38 of 273 complaints.

Symptoms

  • Airbag warning light on (38 NHTSA complaints), or no record of the Takata inflator replacement
  • Brake pedal to the floor from a corroded line (see the brake-line entry)

Causes found

  • Takata ammonium-nitrate inflators that can rupture; two replacement rounds for 2003–2014 Legacy/Outback
  • Brake line corrosion from salt behind the fuel tank protector

Check in this order

  • Enter the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or the Subaru recall lookup and list every open campaign
  • Ask a dealer for the campaign history on the VIN; replacement inflators from the first round were themselves recalled later

What fixed it

  • All recall work is free at a Subaru dealer regardless of ownership history
  • The 19V-297 ignition-switch recall (key removable with the automatic out of Park) does not apply to a manual-transmission car
