Turbo & oil supply
Oil consumption and running low on oil
The EJ255 uses and leaks oil as it ages, and it holds only 4.0 litres. Running it a quart or two low is the common thread behind the expensive failures, so owners treat checking the dipstick as the most important habit on this car.
Frequency basis: Reported as a quart in 2,000–3,000 miles by several XT owners, a dry dipstick in 3,000 miles in one case, and "Excessive Oil Consumption" is one of four headline problem articles for the 2004–2009 generation on subarucomplaints.com. Many turbo and ringland failures in the threads trace back to a low oil level.
Symptoms
- Dipstick drops a quart or more between oil changes; one owner found it dry at 3,000 miles
- Blue smoke on startup or after idling; burning-oil smell on short trips
- Oil residue in the intercooler and turbo inlet
Causes found
- External leaks at the valve cover gaskets, spark plug tube seals, oil cooler o-ring and turbo lines (see the oil-leak entry)
- Turbo seals passing oil into the intake and exhaust
- Worn or gummed oil control rings, and in the worst case a cracked ringland
- A stuck PCV valve pushing oil into the intake
Check in this order
- Check the oil every fuel fill on a level surface; "check your oil every time you add gas" is the standing forum advice
- Degrease the engine, drive, and find external leaks before assuming the engine is burning it
- Pull the turbo inlet and intercooler and look for pooled oil
- Compression and hot leak-down tests before accepting a ringland diagnosis
What fixed it
- Fix the external leaks first; valve cover gaskets alone cured both the leak and the smell for several owners
- Shorter oil-change intervals with a full-synthetic 5W-30 and keeping the level at the upper mark
- Replace the turbo if its seals are the source
- Engines that were run dry needed a rebuilt or JDM replacement engine (owners cite $1,350 for a JDM engine delivered up to $10,000 for a full rebuild)
