Torn CV axle boots and worn joints
The front inner CV boots split with age and heat from the exhaust, sling grease onto the underside, and the joint then wears. Clicking on turns means the outer joint is already gone; vibration under acceleration points to the inner.
Frequency basis: Torn boots, usually the front inners, appear in the 2005 XT known-issues list, in TrueDelta owner repair logs for the turbo 5MT ($100–600 per side), and in generation-wide reviews. A routine wear item that becomes a joint replacement when the grease is lost.
Symptoms
- Grease flung inside the wheel well or on the exhaust; a torn or cracked boot on inspection
- Clicking on full-lock turns (outer joint) or vibration under acceleration (inner joint)
- Leaking front right axle seal found during other work in one torque-bind case
Causes found
- Boot rubber ageing, aggravated by heat from the turbo-side exhaust
- Driving on a torn boot until the grease is gone
Check in this order
- Look at all four boots at every oil change, especially the front inners near the exhaust
- Check for play in the joints with the wheel off the ground
What fixed it
- Re-boot a joint caught early; replace the axle once it clicks or vibrates
- Owners logged $100–600 per side depending on reman versus OEM axle; front axles are about 1.5 hours labour, rears 3–3.5 hours per Samarins
